Detached Drugs Awareness Project

The Detached Drug Project delivers universal and targeted drug education, awareness and harm reduction to young people in Richmond in a variety of settings using multiple methods. (Please note the DDP definition of "drugs" includes alcohol and tobacco).

Working with schools, colleges, the YOT and PRS, the DDP delivers tailored workshops appropriate to age, the school’s curriculum and Every Child Matters. We have also delivered drug education through school assemblies and the Drugs Stall – a special event market-stall offering leaflets, interactive educational tools and a chance to ask workers questions.

The DDP is dedicated to detached work and runs a programme of visits to the Youth Café Bus, King’s Field Youth Café and the borough’s Youth Clubs, using interactive tools to engage in conversations with young people. In addition, within this informal setting, there is a greater emphasis on relationship building and small group/one-on-one discussions as a way of delivering drug education, harm reduction and signposting to other services e.g. Young People’s Drug and Alcohol Support, with whom the DDP works closely.

Detached work also involves contact with other voluntary services, such as the Scouts to deliver workshops. We also attend conferences, such as the Richmond and Hounslow Crime Conference, to distribute leaflets and answer questions.

Outreach work at Richmond College, the borough parks and on the street is another method used by the DDP to engage young people that might otherwise not be receiving any drug education or harm reduction advice.

Partnership work is highly regarded by the DDP. As well as working closely with Young People’s Drug and Alcohol Support, the DDP is working with Richmond College, along with the help of Richmond’s Primary Care Trust, to deliver Smoking Cessation to students.

The DDP also works with young people to help inform our work and publicity. The new website, www.thisisdrugs.info, was influenced and designed by students of Richmond College.
